FAQ

Do I need a NYS Pistol Permit to take a handgun class?

Unfortunately, in New York State, you cannot touch a handgun/pistol without a pistol permit. However, that does not mean that you cannot take a safety or basic handgun class and work with simulators.

Additionally, some classes will be held in Pennsylvania to get around this ridiculous and unsafe restriction.

Do I need a permit to take a rifle or shotgun class?

No! Fortunately, there is no permit requirement to own or shoot a rifle or shotgun in New York State. While most classes will require you to bring your own rifle or shotgun (only NY compliant firearms will be permitted), some special classes for new shooters will feature loaner firearms.

How old do I have to be to take a class, and do I need any previous experience?

You must be 18 years old to take a long gun class (rifle or pistol) and 21 years old to take a pistol class (unless it's with simulators). If you are under 18, arrangements can be made for rifle and pistol classes with parental consent.

Some classes do require previous experience, and that will be indicated in the class description. However, there are many classes you can take, such as basic or intro classes, that are specifically designed for people who have never held a firearm before, those with limited experience or those who want to brush up on safety and shooting basics.

What if I don't want a class, what if I just want to come and shoot some guns!

We do offer group and individual shooting experiences for those interested in supervised shooting of various long guns (rifles and shotguns). For training conducted in New York (which is most of our offerings), such experiences will be limited to New York compliant (legal) firearms. Fortunately, this includes AR15 rifles, semi-automatic shotguns and many other fun and interesting firearms, such as the Kel Tec KSG. Some of them (particularly the AR15s) may look funny, but they work exactly the same.
